Derks Field was the site of a competitive game between the Minneapolis Millers and Salt Lake City Locusts.

Salt Lake City pitcher Jessie Downing did his part in helping his team beat the Minneapolis Millers, 5-3. The left-hander kept opposing batters from doing too much damage. Downing, now 1-0, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 8, walking 4, and allowing 3 runs. The save was credited to Mark Cahill, his 1st.

Salt Lake City took control in the bottom of the sixth. With no one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Howard Garner hit a run-scoring single to make it 3-2, Locusts.

"This was a good win," said Downing.

The victory makes Salt Lake City 1-1.
