Austin pitcher Jorge Ayala did his part in helping his team beat the Houston Lone Stars, 2-1. The right-hander kept opposing batters from doing too much damage. With the win, Austin upped its record to 40-39.
Had Wilson Pérez not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Pérez hit a 2-run single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Cowboys.
"We won," said Pérez. "But they made us earn it."
