Ports Best Ironhorse in Pitching Duel
|
Ironhorse Stadium was the site of a remarkable pitchers' duel.
The Long Beach Ports beat the Sacramento Ironhorse, 2-0, at Ironhorse Stadium. Starting pitcher Johnny Clayton was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. With the win, Long Beach elevates its record to 7-6.
Long Beach used the timely hitting of Gonzalo Nieves to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Ports on top, 2-0. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"I was just trying to execute one pitch at a time," said Clayton.
