The Hollywood Stars topped the Long Beach Ports, 6-5, in Pacific Coast League action at Gilmore Field. The standout performance belonged to Hollywood pitcher and Bayamón, Puerto Rico, native Jesús Chávez. Hollywood reliever Jerry Álvarez was the winner. His record is now 1-0. Jim Rogers took the loss. The loss puts Long Beach at 1-1.

The Stars got a clutch hit from pinch hitter Calvin Merrit. In the bottom of the tenth, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Stars.

"Baseball is such a beautiful game," said Merrit. "Anything can happen on any night, and that's why you don't dwell on what happened yesterday. Just look forward and trust you're going to have positive results."
